Google has unveiled a schedule for discontinuing support for version two of the Chrome manifest in favor of version three, which has faced criticism for disrupting the functionality of many ad-blocking extensions and security measures. This includes the widely used ad blocker uBlock Origin, which cannot transition to version three of the manifest due to the removal of support for the blocking mode of the webRequest API. <\/p>\n

Starting January 17, 2022, the Chrome Web Store will no longer accept extensions that use version two of the manifest, though developers of previously added extensions will still be able to publish updates. In January 2023, support for version two of the manifest will be discontinued in Chrome, and all associated extensions will cease to function. At the same time, publishing updates for such extensions in the Chrome Web Store will be prohibited. <\/p>\n

As a reminder, in version three of the manifest, which defines the capabilities and resources available to extensions, as part of the initiative to enhance security and privacy<\/a> the webRequest API has been replaced with a limited capability declarativeNetRequest API. While the webRequest API allows for custom handlers that have full access to network requests and can dynamically modify traffic, the declarativeNetRequest API only grants access to the built-in filtering engine within the browser, which independently processes blocking rules, does not permit the use of custom filtering algorithms, and does not allow for complex, overlapping rules based on conditions. <\/p>\n

According to Google, it continues to implement new features in declarativeNetRequest that are in demand among extensions using webRequest, and it intends to shape the new API to fully meet the needs of developers of existing extensions. For instance, Google has already taken community requests into account and added support for the use of multiple static rule sets in the declarativeNetRequest API, regular expression filtering, HTTP header modification, dynamic rule changes and additions, removal and replacement of request parameters, tab-bound filtering, and creation of session-specific rule sets. In the coming months, it also plans to implement support for dynamically configurable content processing scripts and the ability to store data in RAM.
