Canonical has introduced the first release of the Ubuntu Frame shell, designed for creating internet kiosks, self-service terminals, information stands, digital signage, smart mirrors, industrial screens, IoT devices, and other similar applications. The shell is aimed at providing a full-screen interface for a single application and is based on the use of the Mir display server and the Wayland protocol. The project's developments are distributed under the GPLv3 license. Packages in snap format have been prepared for download. <\/p>\n
Ubuntu Frame can be used to run applications based on GTK, Qt, Flutter, and SDL2, as well as programs based on Java, HTML5, and Electron. It supports running both applications built with Wayland support and programs based on the X11 protocol (using Xwayland). To enable work in Ubuntu Frame with separate web pages or sites, an Electron Wayland program is being developed that implements a specialized full-screen web browser, as well as a port of the WPE WebKit engine. For quick setup and deployment of solutions based on Ubuntu Frame, it is recommended to use packages in snap format, which provide isolation for the launched programs from the rest of the system.

The Ubuntu Frame shell is adapted to work on top of the Ubuntu Core system environment, a compact version of the Ubuntu distribution supplied as an indivisible monolithic image of the base system, which does not use separate deb packages and employs atomic updates for the entire system. Components of Ubuntu Core, including the base system, Linux kernel, system extensions, and additional applications, are supplied in snap format and managed by the snapd toolset. Span format components are isolated using AppArmor and Seccomp, creating an additional layer of protection for the system in case of compromise of individual applications. The base file system is mounted in read-only mode. <\/p>\n
To create a customized kiosk limited to the operation of a single application, the developer only needs to prepare the application itself, while all other tasks related to hardware support, keeping the system up to date, and organizing user interaction are handled by Ubuntu Core and Ubuntu Frame, including support for gesture control on touchscreen systems. It is claimed that updates addressing bugs and vulnerabilities in Ubuntu Frame releases will be provided for 10 years. If desired, the shell can be launched not only in Ubuntu Core but also in any Linux distribution that supports Snap packages.
