SUSE has announced the release of the open-source application Rancher Desktop 0.6.0, providing a graphical interface for creating, running, and managing containers based on the Kubernetes platform. The program is developed in JavaScript using the Electron framework and is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license. Initially, Rancher Desktop was available only for macOS and Windows, but version 0.6.0 introduces experimental support for Linux. Pre-built packages in deb and rpm formats are offered for installation. Another significant improvement is the support for the Containerd namespace, which is separate from the Kubernetes namespace. <\/p>\n

Rancher Desktop is similar in purpose to the proprietary product Docker Desktop, differing mainly in its use of the nerdctl CLI interface and the containerd runtime for creating and running containers. In the future, Rancher Desktop plans to add support for Docker CLI and Moby. It allows users to test developed containers and containerized applications on their workstation through a simple graphical interface before deploying them to production systems. <\/p>\n

Rancher Desktop allows you to select a specific version of Kubernetes for use, test your containers with various Kubernetes versions, instantly launch containers without registration in Kubernetes services, build, pull, and push container images, and deploy the developed application in a container on the local system (network ports associated with containers are accessible only from localhost).
