Google has released the stable version of the Knative 1.0 platform, designed for creating serverless computing infrastructure deployed on top of container isolation systems based on Kubernetes. In addition to Google, companies such as IBM, Red Hat, SAP, and VMware are also involved in the development of Knative. The release of Knative 1.0 marks the stabilization of the API for application development, which will now remain unchanged and retain backward compatibility. The project code is written in Go and is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license. <\/p>\n

The serverless application development model offered by Knative provides an additional layer of abstraction for cloud systems, enabling functions to operate as services (FaaS, Functions as a Service). The essence of the serverless model is that the developer implements logic at the level of individual functions without worrying about creating and managing the infrastructure needed to run applications, and without being tied to specific server applications and the cloud environments necessary for their operation. <\/p>\n

Development occurs without creating monolithic applications at the level of a set of small, separate functions, each of which processes a specific event and is designed to operate independently without being tied to the environment (stateless, meaning the result does not depend on past states and filesystem contents). Functions are triggered only when necessary, and after processing an event, they can immediately terminate, meaning that unlike microservices, there is no need for environments to be continuously running, consuming resources idly. <\/p>\n

The Knative platform automatically launches containers as needed, deploys the prepared functions within them, orchestrates management, and ensures the scaling of the environments required for executing these functions. The platform can be deployed on its own infrastructure without reliance on external cloud services. Only Kubernetes is required for deployment. It provides tools to support various common frameworks, including Django, Ruby on Rails, and Spring. A command-line interface can be used to manage the platform's operations. <\/p>\n
