The first beta release of the Airyx operating system is now available, offering a macOS-style environment aimed at providing a certain level of compatibility with macOS applications. Airyx is based on FreeBSD and uses a graphical stack based on the X server. Project developments are distributed under the BSD license. The size of the bootable ISO image is 1.9 GB (x86_64). <\/p>\n

The project's goal is to achieve compatibility with macOS applications at the source code level (the ability to recompile the code of open macOS applications to run on Airyx) and executable files (patches have been added to the kernel and tools for launching Mach-O executable files compiled for the x86-64 architecture). The user interface implementation uses macOS-standard concepts, such as a top panel with a global menu, identical menu structure, keyboard shortcuts, a file manager styled similarly to Filer, and support for commands like launchctl and open. The graphical environment is based on the KDE Plasma shell, styled to resemble macOS. <\/p>\n

The supported file systems used in macOS include HFS+ and APFS, as well as specific system directories. For example, in addition to the hierarchies typical of FreeBSD at \/usr and \/usr\/local, Airyx employs directories \/Library, \/System, and \/Volumes. User home directories are located in the \/Users directory. Each home directory contains a subdirectory ~\/Library for applications using the Apple Cocoa API. <\/p>\n

Applications can be packaged as self-contained app packages (App Bundle) in AppImage format, placed in the \/Applications or ~\/Applications directories. Programs do not require installation or the use of a package manager \u2014 simply drag and drop to launch the AppImage file. Support for traditional FreeBSD packages and ports is also maintained. <\/p>\n

To ensure compatibility with macOS, a partial implementation of the Cocoa API and Objective-C runtime is provided (located in the \/System\/Library\/Frameworks directory), along with additional modified compilers and linkers to support them. Support for XCode project files and software written in Swift is planned. In addition to the compatibility layer for macOS, Airyx also allows the running of Linux applications based on the Linux emulation environment infrastructure offered in FreeBSD (Linuxulator). <\/p>\n
