Gunderson, one of the authors of the Snappy compression library and a participant in the development of IPv6, has announced his return to Google, where he previously worked on image search services and offline maps, but will now be involved in the development of the Chrome browser. Prior to this, Steinar spent five years at Oracle modernizing the optimizer for the MySQL DBMS. According to Steinberg, MySQL is significantly outdated and inefficient, even though most users and developers think everything is fine, without bothering to compare it to other DBMS options that have long moved ahead. The optimizations implemented for MySQL 8.x have notably improved query optimizer performance compared to MySQL 5.7, but overall, the performance is considered to be at the level of early 2000s technology. Oracle does not allocate sufficient resources for further development of MySQL to a competitive state, hindering its ability to remain a viable product.
