Three libraries containing malicious code have been identified in the PyPI (Python Package Index) catalog. Before the issues were discovered and the packages were removed from the catalog, they had been downloaded almost 15,000 times in total. <\/p>\n

The packages dpp-client (10194 downloads) and dpp-client1234 (1536 downloads) have been distributed since February and included code for sending the contents of environment variables, which could, for example, include access keys, tokens, or passwords for continuous integration systems or cloud environments like AWS. The packages also sent to an external host a list of directory contents 'home', 'mnt\/mesos\/', and 'mnt\/mesos\/sandbox'.

The aws-login0tool package (3042 downloads) was hosted in the PyPI repository on December 1 and included code to download and run a Trojan application to take control of hosts running Windows. When choosing the package name, it was calculated that the keys '0' and '-' are close together, making it likely that a developer would type 'aws-login0tool' instead of 'aws-login-tool'.

Problematic packages were identified during a simple experiment in which a portion of PyPI packages (about 200,000 out of 330,000 packages in the repository) were downloaded using the Bandersnatch utility, after which the grep utility was used to extract and analyze packages where the setup.py file mentioned a call to 'import urllib.request', commonly used for sending requests to external hosts.
