Collabora has introduced the wxrd composite server, built on the Wayland protocol and designed to create a desktop environment using xrdesktop components within three-dimensional virtual reality settings. The project is based on the wlroots library, developed by the creators of the Sway window manager, and the wxrc composite server, tailored for use in virtual reality systems. The project's code is written in the C programming language and is released under the MIT license. <\/p>\n

Unlike the initially proposed solution in xrdesktop, wxrd offers a specialized composite server server<\/a> for virtual reality environments, instead of adapting existing window managers and desktop shells for VR systems (xrdesktop provides separate patches for kwin and GNOME Shell, which require adjustments for each new release of those components). Using wxrd allows not only mirroring the contents of an existing two-dimensional desktop, which is also displayed on a regular monitor, but also processing windows that are specifically launched for the three-dimensional desktop (i.e., preventing access from the VR headset to the desktop used on the current system, while forming a separate environment for the VR headset).

In contrast to similar projects like Simula VR, Stardust, Motorcar, and Safespaces, the wxrd composite server is designed with a focus on minimizing dependencies and reducing resource consumption. Wxrd also allows working not only with Wayland protocol-based applications but also enables running X11 applications through the xwayland DDX server. <\/p>\n

Since the Wayland protocol extension for virtual keyboards is still under development, data input in wxrd is implemented through a keyboard input emulation system that transmits all unicode characters, including emojis, from the virtual keyboard provided in xrdesktop. wxrd requires a graphics card that supports the Vulkan graphics API and the VK_EXT_image_drm_format_modifier extension, available in Mesa starting from version 21.1 (included in Ubuntu 21.04). To use the Vulkan API for rendering, the VK_EXT_physical_device_drmm extension is needed, which was introduced in Mesa 21.2 (Ubuntu 21.10). <\/p>\n
