A new operating system called Essence is available for initial testing, featuring its own kernel and graphical user interface. The project has been developed by a single enthusiast since 2017, created from scratch, and is notable for its unique approach to building the desktop and graphical stack. The most prominent feature is the ability to split windows into tabs, allowing work with multiple programs in a single window and grouping applications by task. The project's code is written in C++ and is distributed under the MIT license.

The window manager operates at the kernel level of the operating system, while the interface is created using its own graphical library and a programmatic vector engine that supports complex animated effects. The interface is fully vector-based and automatically scales for any screen resolution. All style information is stored in separate files, making it easy to change the appearance of applications. For software rendering, OpenGL uses code from Mesa. Support for multiple languages is included, with FreeType and Harfbuzz used for font rendering.

The kernel includes a task scheduler with multi-level priority support, a memory management subsystem with shared memory, mmap, and a multi-threaded page handler, a network stack (TCP\/IP), a sound subsystem for mixing sounds, a VFS, and the EssenceFS file system with a separate layer for data caching. In addition to its own file system, drivers for Ext2, FAT, NTFS, and ISO9660 are provided. Functionality can be moved to modules with the ability to load such modules as needed. Drivers are prepared for ACPI with ACPICA, IDE, AHCI, NVMe, BGA, SVGA, HD Audio, Ethernet 8254x, and USB XHCI (storage and HID devices). <\/p>\n
Compatibility with third-party applications is achieved through a POSIX layer sufficient for running GCC and part of the Busybox utilities. Notable applications ported for Essence include the Musl C library, Bochs emulator, GCC, Binutils, FFmpeg, and Mesa. Among the graphical applications specifically created for Essence are a file manager, text editor, IRC client, image viewer, and system monitor.

The system can run on outdated hardware with less than 64 MB of RAM and takes about 30 MB of disk space. To save resources, only the active application is run while all background programs are paused. Booting takes just a few seconds, and shutdown occurs almost instantly. The project publishes new ready builds daily, suitable for testing in QEMU.
