The release of the fully free Linux distribution Trisquel 10.0, based on the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS package base and aimed at small businesses, educational institutions, and home users, has been announced. Trisquel has been personally endorsed by Richard Stallman, officially recognized by the Free Software Foundation as fully free, and listed among the foundation's recommended distributions. Installation images of 2.7 GB and 1.2 GB (x86_64, armhf) are available for download. Updates for the distribution will be provided until April 2025. <\/p>\n
The distribution is notable for excluding all non-free components, such as binary drivers, firmware, and graphical elements distributed under non-free licenses or using registered trademarks. Despite the complete absence of proprietary components, Trisquel is compatible with Java (OpenJDK) and supports most audio and video formats, including working with protected DVDs, all while employing only fully free implementations of these technologies. MATE (default), LXDE, and KDE are offered as desktop environments. <\/p>\n

The creation of builds for the i686 architecture has been discontinued, but builds for the ARM architecture (armhf) have been added. Future support for ARM64 and PowerPC architectures is planned.\n
The transition from the Ubuntu 18.04 package base to the Ubuntu 20.04 branch has been completed.\n
Version 5.4 has completely updated the free variant of the Linux kernel \u2014 Linux Libre, free from proprietary firmware and drivers containing non-free components. As options, packages with kernels 5.8 and 5.13 are available.\n
The MATE desktop has been updated to version 1.24. Optionally, the user environments LXDE 0.99.2 and KDE 5.18 are available for installation.\n
Updated versions of applications include Abrowser (renamed Firefox) 96.0, Icedove (Thunderbird) 91.5.0, LibreOffice 7.1.7, VLC 3.0.9.2, Xorg 7.7, and GLibc 2.31. <\/ul>\n

Inclusion of software with approved FSF licenses in the distribution; <\/li>\n
Prohibition on the delivery of binary firmware and any binary driver components; <\/li>\n
The rejection of immutable functional components, but the possibility of including non-functional ones, provided there is permission to copy and distribute them for commercial and non-commercial purposes (for example, CC BY-ND maps for a GPL game); <\/li>\n
The inadmissibility of using trademarks whose terms of use hinder free copying and distribution of the entire distribution or any of its parts; <\/li>\n
Compliance with the licensing purity of documentation, the inadmissibility of documentation that recommends the installation of proprietary software to solve specific tasks. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Dynebolic \u2014 a specialized distribution for processing video and audio data (no longer in development \u2014 the last release was on September 8, 2011); <\/li>\n
Hyperbola \u2014 based on stabilized snapshots of the Arch Linux package base with the transfer of some Debian patches for enhanced stability and security. The project evolves according to the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) and aims to provide users with a simple, lightweight, stable, and secure environment. <\/li>\n
Parabola GNU\/Linux \u2014 a distribution based on the developments of the Arch Linux project; <\/li>\n
PureOS \u2014 based on the Debian package base and developed by Purism, which is advancing the Librem 5 smartphone and releasing laptops supplied with this distribution and CoreBoot-based firmware; <\/li>\n
Trisquel \u2014 a distribution based on Ubuntu, specialized for small enterprises, home users, and educational institutions; <\/li>\n
Ututo \u2014 a GNU\/Linux distribution built on the Gentoo base. <\/li>\n
libreCMC (libre Concurrent Machine Cluster), a specialized distribution designed for use in embedded devices such as wireless routers. <\/li>\n
Guix \u2014 based on the Guix package manager and the GNU Shepherd initialization system (formerly known as GNU dmd), written in the Guile language (one implementation of the Scheme language), which is also used to define service launch parameters. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
