The release of Bastille 0.9.20220216, a system for automating the deployment and management of applications running in containers isolated by the FreeBSD Jail mechanism, has been published. The code is written in Shell, requires no external dependencies, and is distributed under the BSD license. <\/p>\n

To manage containers, a command-line interface called bastille is provided, which allows you to create and update Jail environments based on the chosen version of FreeBSD and perform operations with containers such as start\/stop, build, clone, import\/export, conversion, configuration changes, network access management, and resource consumption limitations. You can deploy Linux (Ubuntu and Debian) environments within containers using Linuxulator. Advanced features include running typical commands simultaneously in multiple containers, nested templates, snapshots, and backup. The root partition within the container is mounted in read-only mode. <\/p>\n

The repository offers about 60 templates for quickly launching containers of typical applications, including programs for servers<\/a> (nginx, mysql, wordpress, asterisk, redis, postfix, elasticsearch, salt, etc.), developers (gitea, gitlab, jenkins, python, php, perl, ruby, rust, go, node.js, openjdk), and users (firefox, chromium). It supports the creation of container stacks, allowing one template to be used within another. An environment for launching containers can be created on both physical servers<\/a> or Raspberry Pi boards, as well as in cloud environments like AWS EC2, Vultr, and DigitalOcean. <\/p>\n

The project is developed by Christer Edwards from SaltStack, who also maintains the ports for the Salt centralized configuration management system for FreeBSD. Christer was once involved in the development of Ubuntu, served as a system administrator at the GNOME Foundation, and worked at Adobe (he is the author of Hubble, an open-source tool by Adobe for monitoring and maintaining system security). <\/p>\n
