The first experimental release of the Neptune OS project has been published. It develops a layer on top of the seL4 microkernel that implements components of the Windows NT kernel, aimed at providing support for running Windows applications. The code is distributed under the GPLv3 license. <\/p>\n

The project implements \"NT Executive,\" one of the levels of the Windows NT core (NTOSKRNL.EXE), responsible for providing the NT Native system call API and an interface for driver operations. In Neptune OS, the NT Executive component and all drivers run not at the kernel level, but as user processes in an environment based on the seL4 microkernel. Interaction between the NT Executive component and drivers is performed through standard seL4 IPC. The provided system calls enable the operation of the NTDLL.DLL library with the implementation of the Win32 application interface used in applications. <\/p>\n

The first version of Neptune OS includes a keyboard driver (kbdclass.sys), a PS\/2 port driver (i8042prt.sys), a beep signal driver (beep.sys), and a command-line interpreter (ntcmd.exe), ported from ReactOS, allowing for a demonstration of the basic principles of operation. The size of the boot image is 1.4 MB. <\/p>\n

The ultimate goal is to develop the layer to a state sufficient for porting the user environment and drivers from ReactOS. The developers also consider the possibility of achieving binary compatibility with Windows executables and acceptable source-level compatibility with Windows kernel drivers. <\/p>\n

The primary obstacle to ensuring support for Windows drivers is identified as the use of a non-standard communication protocol by most Windows kernel drivers when interacting with other drivers, relying on direct pointer passing. This cannot be implemented in Neptune OS due to drivers running in separate processes.
