The release of version 1.6 of the decentralized messaging program Speek has been published, aimed at providing maximum privacy, anonymity, and protection from tracking. User identifiers in Speek are based on the use of public keys and are not tied to phone numbers or email addresses. No centralized servers are used in the infrastructure, and all data exchange occurs only in P2P mode through direct connections between users over the Tor network. The project code is written in C++ using the Qt toolkit and is distributed under the BSD license. Builds are available for Linux (AppImage), macOS, and Windows. <\/p>\n
The main idea of the project is to use the anonymous Tor network for data exchange. A separate hidden Tor service is created for each user, the identifier of which is used to determine the subscriber (the user's login matches the onion address of the hidden service). The use of Tor ensures user anonymity and protects their IP address and location from disclosure. To protect correspondence from interception and analysis in case of system access, public key encryption is applied, and all messages are deleted after the session ends, leaving no traces like in ordinary face-to-face communication. Metadata and message texts are not stored on the disk. <\/p>\n
Before starting a conversation, key exchange is performed, and the user and their public key are added to the address book. Another user can only be added after sending a communication request and receiving consent to receive messages. After launching, the application creates its hidden service and checks for the presence of hidden services for users in the address book; if their hidden services are running, users are marked as online. File sharing is supported, for which encryption and P2P mode are also used.
