The Linux kernel developers' mailing list has noted issues with the maintenance of the new NTFS file system implementation, released by Paragon Software and included in the Linux kernel 5.15. One of the conditions for incorporating the new NTFS code into the kernel was to ensure ongoing maintenance of the code within the kernel, but since November 24 of last year, any activity in the development of the open NTFS3 codebase has ceased, the appointed maintainer is out of contact, bug reports are being ignored, and submitted patches are not being considered for inclusion. <\/p>\n

There is also a specific attitude of the NTFS3 maintainers towards the submitted fixes until the connection is lost \u2014 patches were either silently applied to the codebase without prior review or were ignored without any explanation. Attempts by a developer interested in the development of NTFS3 to discuss the situation in private correspondence, as well as the offer to help with maintenance and take on some responsibilities, went unanswered. The intentions of the head of Paragon Software to open additional tools for NTFS also remain nothing more than promises for now. <\/p>\n

As for the next steps in the situation, if maintenance is not restored, it is proposed to classify NTFS3 as orphaned and remove the driver from the kernel to avoid creating the illusion of support for NTFS, while actually providing an unfinished, unsupported implementation with uncorrected bugs.
