Martin Wimpress, co-founder of the Ubuntu MATE team and a member of the MATE project's Core Team, has released the deb-get utility, which offers functions similar to apt-get for managing deb packages distributed through third-party repositories or available for direct download from project websites. deb-get supports standard package management commands like update, upgrade, show, install, remove, and search, but the packages themselves are downloaded not from the distribution's repositories, but directly from the repositories and websites maintained by the software producers. <\/p>\n
Essentially, deb-get is a bash script that defines the rules for downloading and updating more than 80 popular programs distributed directly or through their own repositories. Some of these programs are not included in the official distribution repositories, for example, due to licensing restrictions. Another portion of the programs on the list is available in the official repositories, but the versions presented there may be significantly outdated compared to the latest releases distributed directly. <\/p>\n
The deb-get utility allows you to use familiar commands for installing and updating these programs, eliminating the need to search for download locations for each program, to manually install deb packages, and to keep track of updates. Supported installation sources include APT repositories, packages on GitHub release pages, PPA repositories, and download sections on websites. <\/p>\n
