Oracle has released Oracle Linux 8.6, built on the package base of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6. An unrestricted installation ISO image, sized at 8.6 GB, is available for download, prepared for x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64) architectures. Oracle Linux provides unlimited and free access to the yum repository with binary package updates for bug fixes (errata) and security issues. In addition to the kernel package from RHEL (based on kernel 4.18), Oracle Linux offers its own Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel 6, derived from Linux kernel 5.4 and optimized for working with Oracle's industrial software and hardware. The source code for the kernel, including individual patch breakdowns, is available in Oracle's public Git repository. The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is installed by default, positioned as an alternative to the standard RHEL kernel package and provides several advanced features, such as DTrace integration and enhanced Btrfs support. <\/p>\n
The new version of Oracle Linux features the release of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel R6U3, which stabilizes support for the WireGuard protocol, expands the capabilities of the asynchronous I\/O interface io_uring, improves nested virtualization support on AMD CPU systems, and enhances NVMe support. Key changes in the UEK R7 kernel include improved support for the Aarch64 architecture, a shift to the DTrace 2.0 dynamic debugging system, enhanced Btrfs support, expanded capabilities of the eBPF subsystem, a new slab memory controller, a split lock detector, and support for Multipath TCP (MPTCP). <\/p>\n
In addition to Oracle Linux, alternatives to RHEL 8.x include Rocky Linux (developed by the community under the leadership of the CentOS founder with the support of a newly established company, Ctrl IQ), AlmaLinux (developed by CloudLinux in collaboration with the community), VzLinux (prepared by Virtuozzo), SUSE Liberty Linux, and EuroLinux.
