Drew DeVault introduced his new project \u2014 the Helios microkernel. Currently, the project is in its early development stage and only supports demo boot on x86_64 architecture. In the future, support for iscv64 and aarch64 architectures is planned. The project code is written in a C-like system programming language called Hare with assembly inserts and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. A test ISO image (1 MB) has been prepared for familiarization with the development state. <\/p>\n

The Helios architecture is built with inspiration from the microkernel concepts of seL4, where components for managing kernel resources are moved to user space, and the same access control mechanisms are applied to them as to user resources. The microkernel provides minimal mechanisms for managing access to physical address space, interrupts, and CPU resources, while high-level abstractions for interacting with hardware drivers are implemented separately above the microkernel as tasks executing at the user level. <\/p>\n

Helios uses a capability-based access control model. The kernel provides primitives for memory page allocation, mapping physical memory into the address space, task management, and handling requests to hardware device ports. In addition to kernel services such as virtual memory management, the project has also prepared drivers for console operation via serial port and BIOS VGA API. The next development stage will include preemptive multitasking, IPC, PCI, exception handling, parsing ACPI tables, and interrupt handlers operating in user space. In the longer term, support for SMP, IOMMU, and VT-x is planned. <\/p>\n

As for user space, the plans include the development of low-level services and the Mercury system manager, a POSIX compatibility layer (Luna), a collection of drivers (Venus), a developer environment (Gaia), and a kernel testing framework (Vulcan). Development is being carried out with a focus on using real hardware \u2014 the initial phase will involve creating drivers for ThinkPad, including drivers for Intel HD GPU, HD Audio, and Intel Gigabit Ethernet. After that, drivers for AMD GPUs and Raspberry Pi boards are expected. <\/p>\n

The ultimate goal of the project is to create a complete operating system called Ares, featuring its own package manager and graphical interface. The motivation for this project stems from a passion for experimentation and viewing work as a form of entertainment (the 'just for fun' principle). Drew DeVolt enjoys setting ambitious goals and then, despite general skepticism, accomplishing them. This was the case with the Sway user environment, the Aerc email client, the SourceHut collaborative development platform, and the Hare programming language. However, even if the new project does not gain wide adoption, it will serve as a starting point for the development of new useful systems. For instance, the debugger developed for Helios is planned to be ported to the Linux platform, and the libraries for building the graphical interface will not be tied to a specific platform.
