Matthias Clasen, leader of the Fedora Desktop Team, member of the GNOME Release Team, and one of the active developers of GTK (responsible for 36.8% of changes in GTK 4), has started a discussion about the possibility of ending support for the X11 protocol in the next major branch GTK5 and only allowing GTK to work on Linux using the Wayland protocol. <\/p>\n
The note accompanying the announcement of the deprecation of X11 states that \"X11 is not getting better, while Wayland is already widely available.\" It goes on to explain that the X11 GTK backend and the code based on Xlib are stagnant and facing maintenance issues. It is noted that for X11 support to be maintained, someone needs to write and maintain the X11-related code, but there are currently no enthusiasts, and the existing GTK developers are mainly focused on supporting Wayland. System developers interested in working within X11-based environments could take maintenance into their own hands and extend support in GTK, but given the current activity, the scenario in which anyone would be willing to take over maintenance of the X11 backend is considered unlikely. <\/p>\n
Currently, GTK is already positioning Wayland as the primary platform for developing functionality and APIs.
