After seven months of development, the free boot firmware release Libreboot 20220710 has been published. This is the fourth release in the GNU project, presented as the first stable release (previous releases were marked as test versions as they required further stabilization and testing). Libreboot develops a fully free branch from the CoreBoot project, providing a binary-free replacement for proprietary UEFI and BIOS firmware responsible for initializing the CPU, memory, peripheral devices, and other hardware components. <\/p>\n
Libreboot aims to create a system environment allowing complete avoidance of proprietary software, not only at the operating system level but also in the firmware that ensures booting. Libreboot does not just strip CoreBoot of non-free components but also adds tools to simplify usage for end-users, forming a distribution that any user without special skills can utilize. <\/p>\n
Among the hardware supported by Libreboot: <\/p>\n

Desktop systems include Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L, Intel D510MO, Intel D410PT, Intel D945GCLF, and Apple iMac 5,2. <\/li>\n
Servers and workstations: ASUS KCMA-D8, ASUS KGPE-D16, ASUS KFSN4-DRE. <\/li>\n
It is noted that the primary focus in preparing the new version was on addressing issues observed in the previous release. Significant changes and support for new boards were not offered in version 20220710, but several improvements were noted: <\/p>\n

Documentation has been significantly improved.\n
Performance optimizations have been made, allowing for faster booting when using a payload environment based on GNU GRUB.\n
On laptops with the GM45\/ICH9M chipset, PECI has been disabled in coreboot to circumvent a microcode error.\n
Extended 16MB builds have been created for Macbook2 and Macbook1.\n
The build system has been improved, including scripts for automatically modifying coreboot configuration files.\n
By default, output through the serial port is disabled for all boards, resolving issues with slow boot times.\n
Initial support for integration with the u-boot loader has been implemented, which is currently not used in builds for boards, but will allow us to start creating builds for ARM platforms in the future. <\/ul>\n
