The committee overseeing the development of the GCC compiler collection (GCC Steering Committee) has approved the inclusion of a Rust language compiler implementation, developed by the gccrs project (GCC Rust), into the main GCC distribution. Following the integration of the frontend, the standard GCC toolchain will be able to compile programs in Rust without needing to install the rustc compiler, which is built using LLVM. <\/p>\n
Developers of gccrs are advised to begin collaborating with teams responsible for reviewing changes and preparing GCC releases in order to conduct a final review and approval of patches in terms of compliance with technical coding requirements for additions to GCC. If the development of gccrs continues according to the previously established schedule and no unforeseen issues arise, the Rust frontend is expected to be integrated into the upcoming release of GCC 13, planned for May of next year. The Rust implementation in GCC 13 will be in beta status, not enabled by default. <\/p>\n
The Rust language focuses on safe memory management and provides tools for achieving high task parallelism. Safe memory practices, which eliminate issues like accessing memory after it has been freed, dereferencing null pointers, and buffer overflows, are achieved in Rust at compile time through reference checking, ownership tracking, object lifetime management (scope), and runtime access validation. Rust also offers protections against integer overflows, requires mandatory initialization of variable values before use, better error handling in the standard library, applies the concept of immutability for references and variables by default, and provides strong static typing to minimize logical errors. <\/p>\n
