The vSMTP project develops a new mail server (MTA) aimed at providing high performance and flexible traffic filtering and management capabilities. The project's code is written in Rust and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. <\/p>\n
According to published testing results from the developers, vSMTP is ten times faster than competing MTAs. For example, vSMTP demonstrated a throughput that is 4-13 times higher than Postfix 3.6.4 when transmitting messages sized at 100 KB and establishing 4-16 concurrent sessions. High performance is achieved through a multithreaded architecture that utilizes asynchronous channels for thread interaction.

vSMTP is primarily focused on ensuring high security, achieved through extensive testing using both static and dynamic methods, as well as the use of the Rust programming language, which, when properly utilized, helps avoid many memory-related errors. Configuration files are defined in TOML format.

A key feature of the project is the built-in vSL language for writing mail filtering scripts, which allows the creation of very flexible rules for filtering unwanted content and managing traffic. The language is based on Rhai, which uses dynamic typing, enabling code embedding in Rust programs and providing a syntax reminiscent of a mix between JavaScript and Rust. Scripts are granted an API for inspecting and modifying incoming messages, redirecting messages, and managing their delivery to local and remote hosts. The scripts support database connections, executing arbitrary commands, and quarantining messages. In addition to vSL, vSMTP also supports SPF and filters based on open relay lists to combat spam. <\/p>\n
Among the plans for future releases is the possibility of integration with SQL-based DBMS (currently, address and host data are provided in CSV format) and support for DANE (DNS-Based Authentication of Named Entities) and DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication) authentication mechanisms.
