The developers of the Rust project have warned users about the upcoming increase in environment requirements for Linux in the compiler, the Cargo package manager, and the standard library libstd. Starting with version Rust 1.64, scheduled for September 22, 2022, the minimum requirements for Glibc will be raised from version 2.11 to 2.17, and for Linux kernels from 2.6.32 to 3.2. These restrictions also apply to executable files of Rust applications built with libstd. <\/p>\n

The new requirements are met by distributions RHEL 7, SLES 12-SP5, Debian 8, and Ubuntu 14.04. Support for RHEL 6, SLES 11-SP4, Debian, and Ubuntu 12.04 will be discontinued. Among the reasons for ending support for old Linux systems are limited resources for maintaining compatibility with outdated environments. In particular, the support for older Glibc necessitates using outdated toolchains during testing in continuous integration systems, in light of the increased version requirements in LLVM and cross-compilation tools. The increase in kernel version requirements is related to the ability to use new system calls in libstd without needing to maintain layers for compatibility with older kernels. <\/p>\n

Users who run executables built with the Rust toolchain in environments with an old Linux kernel are advised to update their systems, stay on older compiler releases, or maintain their own branch of libstd with compatibility layers.
