The release of the anonymous network I2P 1.9.0 and the C++ client i2pd 2.43.0 has been announced. I2P is a multi-layered anonymous distributed network that operates over the regular Internet and actively utilizes end-to-end encryption to ensure anonymity and isolation. The network is built in a P2P mode and is formed thanks to the resources (bandwidth) provided by the network's users, allowing it to operate without centralized servers (communications within the network are based on encrypted unidirectional tunnels between participants and peers). <\/p>\n
In the I2P network, users can create websites and blogs anonymously, send instant messages and emails, share files, and organize P2P networks. To build and use anonymous networks for client-server (websites, chats) and P2P (file sharing, cryptocurrencies) applications, I2P clients are used. The basic I2P client is written in Java and can run on a wide range of platforms, such as Windows, Linux, macOS, Solaris, etc. I2pd is an independent implementation of the I2P client in C++ and is distributed under a modified BSD license. <\/p>\n
The new version of I2P has completed the development of a new transport protocol «SSU2», based on UDP and noted for its enhanced performance and security. Tests have been implemented to verify SSU2 on the side of peers and relays. The «SSU2» protocol is enabled by default in builds for Android and ARM, as well as on a small percentage of routers based on other platforms. The November release is set to include «SSU2» for all users. The implementation of SSU2 will allow for a complete update of the cryptographic stack, eliminating the use of the very slow ElGamal algorithm (the ECIES-X25519-AEAD-Ratchet combination will be used for end-to-end encryption instead of ElGamal\/AES+SessionTag), reduce overhead compared to SSU, and improve performance on mobile devices. <\/p>\n
Among other improvements, a deadlock detector has been added, the sending of router information (RI, RouterInfo) has been ensured, and the handling of MTU\/PMTU in the old SSU protocol has been improved.
