The release of the Cemu 2.0 emulator has been announced, allowing standard PCs to run games and applications designed for the Nintendo Wii U console. This release is notable for the opening of the project's source code and the transition to an open development model, as well as providing support for the Linux platform. The code is written in C++ and is open under the MPL 2.0 license. <\/p>\n
The emulator has been in development since 2014, but until now it was distributed as a proprietary application for Windows. Recently, development has been solely undertaken by the project's founder, consuming all of his free time and leaving no room for other projects. The author of Cemu hopes that the transition to an open development model will attract new developers and turn Cemu into a collaborative project. He continues to work on Cemu and intends to keep developing it, but without dedicating all of his time to it. <\/p>\n
Pre-built versions are available for Windows and Ubuntu 20.04. For other Linux distributions, users are advised to compile the code themselves. The Linux port uses wxWidgets on top of GTK3. The SDL library is used for input device interactions. A graphics card supporting OpenGL 4.5 or Vulkan 1.1 is required. Wayland support is available, but builds for environments based on this protocol have not been tested. Plans include creating universal packages in AppImages and Flatpak formats. <\/p>\n
Currently, the emulator has been tested for running 708 games developed for the Wii U. There are 499 untested games. Ideal performance has been noted for 13% of the tested games. Acceptable performance is reported for 39% of the games, which experience minor graphical and sound-related deviations that do not impact gameplay significantly. 19% of the games launch, but the gameplay is incomplete due to more serious issues. 14% of the games launch but crash during gameplay or when showing the splash screen. For 16% of the games, crashes or freezes occur during startup. <\/p>\n
Emulation of DRC game controllers (GamePad), Pro Controller, Classic Controller, and Wiimotes is supported, as well as control via keyboard and connection of existing game controllers through USB port.
