Google has made changes to the Play Store catalog rules that restrict the provided VpnService API. The new rules prohibit the use of VpnService for filtering the traffic of other applications for monetization, hidden collection of personal and confidential data, and any manipulation with advertisements that may affect the monetization of other apps. <\/p>\n

Services are also required to implement mandatory encryption for tunneled traffic and to comply with developer rules related to advertising fraud, permission requests, and malicious activity. The prohibition of ad traffic manipulation on devices may also negatively impact applications designed to bypass monetization restrictions, such as those redirecting ad requests through servers<\/a> in other countries. <\/p>\n

As examples of applications whose functionality will be affected, there are Blokada v5, Jumbo, and Duck Duck Go. The developers of Blokada have already circumvented the imposed restriction in version v6 by shifting traffic filtering from the user's device to external servers, which is not prohibited by the new rules. <\/p>\n

Among other changes to the rules, a ban on fullscreen ads will come into effect on September 30. This applies if such ads cannot be dismissed within 15 seconds or if they appear unexpectedly when users attempt to perform actions in the app. For instance, fullscreen ads cannot be displayed as a splash screen at launch or during gameplay, including when transitioning to a new level. <\/p>\n

Starting tomorrow, a ban will also take effect on the placement of applications that mislead users by posing as another developer, company, or application. This ban covers the use of logos from other companies and applications in icons, the mention of other companies' names in the developer name (for example, publishing under the name 'Google Developer' by someone not affiliated with Google), false claims of involvement with a product or service, as well as violations related to trademark use. <\/p>\n

Effective today, there is a requirement that apps with paid subscriptions must provide users with clear means to manage their subscription and cancel it. This includes ensuring that the app offers easy access to a straightforward method for unsubscribing online.
