The developers of the SerenityOS operating system have introduced a cross-platform web browser, Ladybird, based on the LibWeb engine and the LibJS JavaScript interpreter, both of which have been in development since 2019. The graphical interface is built using the Qt library. The code is written in C++ and distributed under the BSD license. It supports operation on Linux, macOS, Windows (WSL), and Android. <\/p>\n

The interface is designed in a classic style and supports tabs. The browser is built using its own web stack, which, in addition to LibWeb and LibJS, includes libraries for text rendering and 2D graphics (LibGfx), a regular expression engine (LibRegex), an XML parser (LibXML), a WebAssembly intermediate code interpreter (LibWasm), a Unicode handling library (LibUnicode), a text encoding conversion library (LibTextCodec), a Markdown markup parser (LibMarkdown), and the LibCore library, which provides a set of utility functions such as time conversion, input\/output, and MIME type handling. <\/p>\n

The browser supports major web standards and successfully passes Acid3 tests. It includes support for HTTP and HTTPS protocols. Future plans mention the implementation of multi-process mode, where each tab is processed in a different process, as well as performance optimizations and the introduction of advanced features such as CSS flexbox and CSS grid. <\/p>\n

Initially, the project was created in July as a working Linux wrapper for debugging the web stack of the SerenityOS operating system, which is developing its own SerenityOS Browser. However, it soon became clear that the development extended beyond just a debugging utility and could be used as a regular browser (the project is still in development and is not ready for everyday use). The web stack has also transformed from a SerenityOS-specific development into a cross-platform browser engine.
