After twenty months of development, a new version of the GNU Bash command interpreter 5.2 has been released, which is used by default in most Linux distributions. At the same time, the release of the readline library 8.2, utilized in bash for command line editing, has been announced. <\/p>\n
Key improvements include: <\/p>\n

The code has been rewritten to parse command substitution constructs (command substitution, inserting the output of another command, such as «$(command)» or `command`). The new implementation utilizes a recursive call to the bison parser and features improved syntax checking and early detection of errors in substitution constructs.\n
The parsing and expansion of array indexes have been improved. It is now possible to use the parameters «@» and «*» in the built-in unset command to reset a specific key to a given value instead of clearing the entire array.\n
A new setting «patsub_replacement» has been added, which, when enabled, allows the «&» character in the replacement string to represent a part of the string that matches the specified pattern. To insert a literal «&», it must be escaped with a backslash.\n
The number of situations where additional processes are not spawned has been expanded; for example, fork is no longer applied when using the construct «$(<file)».\n
A new internal framework for timers and timeout calculations has been implemented.\n
An option has been provided to enable an alternative array implementation during the build stage (configure --enable-alt-array-implementation), which is optimized for maximum access speed at the cost of increased memory consumption.\n
The use of substitutions $’…’ and $»…» applied during localization has been expanded. A setting noexpand_translations and a build option «configure --enable-translatable-strings» have been added to control the inclusion of support for localized substitutions $»…».\n
A new setting «globskipdots» has been added and is enabled by default, which prevents returning «.» and «..» when expanding paths. <\/ul>\n
