GitHub released a report analyzing the statistics for 2022. Key trends: <\/p>\n

In 2022, 85.7 million new repositories were created (61 million in 2021, 60 million in 2020), more than 227 million pull requests were accepted, and 31 million issue notifications were closed. In GitHub Actions, 263 million automated tasks were completed over the year. The total number of repositories reached 339 million.\n
The overall contribution of participants to all projects is estimated at 3.5 billion actions (commits, issues, pull requests, discussions, reviews, etc.). A total of 413 million such actions were performed in 2022.\n
GitHub's audience grew by 20.5 million users over the year, reaching 94 million (compared to 73 million last year, 56 million the year before that, and 41 million three years ago).\n
The highest number of new developers connecting to GitHub came from the USA, India (32.4%), China (15.6%), Brazil (11.6%), Russia (7.3%), Indonesia (7.3%), the UK (6.1%), Germany (5.3%), Japan (5.2%), France (4.7%), and Canada (4.6%).\n
JavaScript remains the most popular language on GitHub. Python ranks second, while Java takes third place. PHP has seen a decline in popularity, dropping to sixth place behind C++.

The most rapidly growing languages include: HCL (Hashicorp Configuration Language) - a 56.1% increase in projects, Rust (50.5%), TypeScript (37.8%), Lua (34.2%), Go (28.3%), Shell (27.7%), Makefile (23.7%), C (23.5%), Kotlin (22.9%), and Python (22.5%).\n

Additionally, GitHub has introduced the GitHub Accelerator initiative, under which it plans to award 20 grants to fund developers of open projects who wish to develop their projects full-time. The grant amount, which covers work for 10 weeks, is $20,000. Grant recipients will be chosen from a pool of applications by an expert council of company leaders involved in open-source software development. <\/p>\n
