As part of the Forgejo project, a fork of the collaborative development platform Gitea was established. The reason given was the rejection of attempts to commercialize the project and the concentration of management in the hands of a commercial company. According to the creators of the fork, the project should remain independent and belong to the community. Forgejo will continue to adhere to the previous principles of independent governance. <\/p>\n

On October 25, the founder of Gitea (Lunny) and one of the active participants (techknowlogick) announced the creation of the commercial company Gitea Limited without prior consultation with the community, which received the rights to domains<\/a> and trademarks (the trademarks and domains initially belonged to the founder of the project). The company announced its intention to develop a commercial version of the Gitea platform, provide paid support services, conduct training, and create a cloud hosting<\/a> repository. <\/p>\n

It was also announced that the Gitea project itself remains open and community-owned, while Gitea Limited will act as a kind of intermediary between the community and other companies interested in using and developing Gitea. The new company also planned to provide part-time pay for several Gitea maintainers (eventually aiming to transition them to full-time and hire additional developers). There were also plans to create a special fund through which third-party companies could sponsor the implementation of desired innovations, optimizations, and corrections of specific shortcomings. <\/p>\n

This step was perceived by some community members as a takeover of the project. Before the fork was created, an open letter was published, signed by 50 Gitea developers, proposing to create a non-profit organization owned by the community to oversee the project and transfer the Gitea trademarks and domains to it rather than to a commercial company. Gitea Limited ignored the community's proposal and confirmed that it now fully controls the project. Following this, a decision was made that the community had no choice but to create a fork and consider it the main project for further development. <\/p>\n

It is noteworthy that the Gitea project was originally founded in December 2016 as a fork of the Gogs project, created by a group of enthusiasts dissatisfied with the management structure of the project. The main motives for creating the fork were to hand over control to the community and simplify participation in development for independent developers. Instead of the model used in Gogs, which is based on adding code through a single main maintainer who makes decisions alone, Gitea adopted a power-sharing model allowing several active developers to add code to the repository.
