The release of the open-source boot firmware Libreboot 20221214 has been announced. The project develops a fully free branch of the CoreBoot project, providing a binary-free replacement for proprietary UEFI and BIOS firmware responsible for initializing the CPU, memory, peripherals, and other hardware components. <\/p>\n
Libreboot aims to create a system environment allowing complete avoidance of proprietary software, not only at the operating system level but also in the firmware that ensures booting. Libreboot does not just strip CoreBoot of non-free components but also adds tools to simplify usage for end-users, forming a distribution that any user without special skills can utilize. <\/p>\n
Among the hardware supported by Libreboot: <\/p>\n

Desktop systems include Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L, Intel D510MO, Intel D410PT, Intel D945GCLF, and Apple iMac 5,2. <\/li>\n
Laptops: ThinkPad X60 \/ X60S \/ X60 Tablet, ThinkPad T60, Lenovo ThinkPad X200 \/ X200S \/ X200 Tablet \/ X220 \/ X230, Lenovo ThinkPad R400, Lenovo ThinkPad T400 \/ T400S \/ T420 \/ T440, Lenovo ThinkPad T500, Lenovo ThinkPad W500, Lenovo ThinkPad R500, Apple MacBook1 and MacBook2, as well as various Chromebook devices from companies ASUS, Samsung, Acer, and HP. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
In the new release: <\/p>\n

Support for ASUS P2B_LS and P3B_F motherboards has been added for testing with the PCBox emulator. ROM images for these motherboards can already successfully initialize the memory and load the payload in the emulator but are currently unable to initialize the VGA ROM.\n
Images for QEMU (arm64 and x86_64) have been added, which can be used for testing.\n

The operation of the board is still not stabilized; for example, there are issues with video, memory initialization, and slow booting. At this development stage, only ATA emulation (without AHCI) can be used in the SATA controller.\n
Support for ARM devices has been added, in which u-boot from CoreBoot is used as the payload instead of depthcharge:\n
