The developers of the Servo browser engine, written in Rust, have announced that they have received funding to help revive the project. The initial tasks include returning to active development of the engine, rebuilding the community, and attracting new contributors. Throughout 2023, efforts will focus on improving the layout system and achieving functional support for CSS2. <\/p>\n
The project stagnated from 2020 after Mozilla laid off the team developing Servo and handed the project over to the Linux Foundation, where a community of interested developers and companies was expected to form for its development. Before becoming an independent project, the engine was developed by Mozilla employees in collaboration with Samsung. <\/p>\n
The engine is written in Rust and features support for multi-threaded rendering of web pages, as well as parallelization of DOM (Document Object Model) operations. In addition to efficient parallelization of operations, the safe programming technologies used in Rust allow for an increased level of security in the codebase. Initially, the Firefox browser engine could not fully harness the potential of modern multi-core systems due to its use of single-threaded content processing schemes. Servo allows splitting the DOM and rendering code into smaller subtasks that can be executed in parallel and utilize multi-core CPU resources more efficiently. Some parts of Servo, such as the multi-threaded CSS engine and the WebRender rendering system, are already integrated into Firefox.
