GitHub has announced its decision to discontinue support for the Subversion version control system. The ability to work with repositories hosted on GitHub through the centralized version control system interface (svn.github.com) will be disabled on January 8, 2024. Prior to the official shutdown at the end of 2023, a series of test outages will be conducted, initially for a few hours, and then for a full day. The reason for discontinuing support for Subversion is the desire to eliminate the costs associated with maintaining unnecessary services \u2014 the backend for Subversion has been noted as having fulfilled its purpose and is no longer in demand by developers. <\/p>\n

Subversion support was implemented in GitHub in 2010 to facilitate a gradual migration to Git for users accustomed to Subversion who continued to use standard SVN tools. In 2010, centralized systems were still widely used, and Git's complete dominance was not evident. The situation has changed, and Git is now used by approximately 94% of developers, while the popularity of Subversion has significantly declined. In its current form, Subversion is virtually unused for accessing GitHub, with requests through this system dropping to 0.02% and only about 5,000 repositories showing at least one SVN access per month.
