The first official release of the DiscoBSD operating system has been published. It is based on the updated source texts of the Unix system 2.11BSD (RetroBSD) and is intended for use on microcontrollers. This initial release includes support for PIC32MX7 microcontrollers based on the MIPS architecture and STM32F4 based on ARM Cortex-M4. The project's code is distributed under the BSD license. <\/p>\n

One of the main goals of the project is to ensure high portability of the OS on devices with memory size restrictions and without an MMU (Memory Management Unit). DiscoBSD can operate on systems with 128 KB of RAM and 128 KB of Flash, with the kernel loaded into Flash and using about 32 KB of RAM, while the remaining 96 KB is allocated to user applications. The root filesystem is stored on an SD card. <\/p>\n

A complete environment familiar to Unix system users is offered for operation. For example, it includes utilities such as sh, csh, grep, sort, uniq, find, uucp, file, iostat, kill, ls, cron, fdisk, mkfs, mount, vi, awk, cc, diff, getty, m4, more, sed, xargs, df, iostat, ps, su, tar, and others.
