The codebase of the Mutter compositing server, which will be used in the GNOME 44 release, has undergone changes that remove support for older versions of OpenGL. Drivers supporting at least OpenGL 3.1 will be required for Mutter. However, support for OpenGL ES 2.0 will be maintained, allowing operation on older graphics cards and GPUs used in ARM platforms. It is expected that removing the code for supporting outdated versions of OpenGL will simplify maintaining the codebase and free up resources for testing new functionality. <\/p>\n
In Mesa, nearly all current OpenGL drivers meet the stated requirements (support for OpenGL 3.1 has not yet been fully implemented in the etnaviv (Vivante), vc4 (VideoCore Raspberry Pi), v3d (VideoCore Raspberry Pi), asahi (Apple Silicon), and lima (Mali 400\/450) drivers). It is anticipated that older GPUs and ARM systems, for which drivers do not provide support for the necessary versions of OpenGL, can still be used by switching to OpenGL ES 2.0.
