The first set of patches has been proposed for inclusion in the main Wine codebase, developed by the Wine-wayland project, to enable the use of Wine in environments based on the Wayland protocol without the need for XWayland and X11 components. Due to the significant amount of changes, Wine-wayland plans to transfer them gradually, breaking the process into several stages for easier review and integration. In the first stage, code covering the winewayland.drv driver and unixlib components has been proposed for inclusion in Wine, along with preparations for handling build system files with Wayland protocol definitions. After completing the update to the main Wine components, users will be able to run a clean Wayland environment with support for launching Windows applications, eliminating the need for X11-related packages. This will lead to improved performance and responsiveness in games by removing unnecessary layers.
