The new version addresses a critical vulnerability (CVE-2023-26463) that can be exploited to bypass authentication and potentially allow the attacker to execute code on the server or client side. The issue arises during the validation of specially crafted certificates in EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) authentication methods based on TLS.

The vulnerability is caused by the fact that the TLS handler incorrectly accepts the public keys from the peer's certificate as trusted, even when the certificate cannot be successfully verified. Specifically, when calling the tls_find_public_key() function to determine trusted certificates, it uses sampling based on the type of public key. The issue is that the variable used to determine the key type for the search operation is set regardless, even if the certificate is not trusted.

Moreover, by manipulating the key, it is possible to reduce the reference counter (if the certificate is untrusted, the reference to the object is released after determining the key type) and free memory for another object still using the key. This flaw does not rule out the creation of exploits to facilitate information leaks from memory and execute their own code.

The attack on server is carried out by the client sending a self-signed certificate for client authentication using EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, EAP-PEAP, and EAP-TNC methods. The attack on the client can be executed by returning proxy server a specially crafted certificate. The vulnerability is present in strongSwan versions 5.9.8 and 5.9.9. Updates for package releases in distributions can be tracked on the following pages: Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, RHEL, SUSE, Arch, FreeBSD, NetBSD.

Source: <a content="nofollow"
