After three months of development, the release of the distributed version control system Git 2.40 has been published. Git is one of the most popular, reliable, and high-performance version control systems, providing flexible tools for nonlinear development based on branching and merging. To ensure the integrity of the history and resilience to 'backward' changes, implicit hashing of the entire previous history is used in each commit, and it's also possible to authenticate the digital signatures of developers for individual tags and commits. <\/p>\n
Compared to the previous release, this new version includes 472 changes prepared with the participation of 88 developers, 30 of whom contributed for the first time. Key innovations include: <\/p>\n

The git-jump script has added support for the Emacs editor, in addition to the previously supported Vim editor. Git-jump is used to pass information about file positions to the text editor for quick navigation and jumping to code editing at a specific location. For example, git-jump can be used to switch between lines obtained from parsing merge conflict resolutions, assessing differences, and performing searches (you can execute 'git jump grep foo' and then quickly switch between positions where the pattern 'foo' occurs).\n
The 'git cat-file' command now supports the use of the '-s' and '--batch-check' options together with '--use-mailmap' for correctly determining the object size taking into account the identifier replacement based on email mappings defined in the mailmap file (previously, the '--use-mailmap' option only affected the output of the content and did not consider that old and replaced name\/email pairs could have different sizes).\n
The 'git check-attr' command has added the '--source' option to select the tree with the necessary '.gitattributes' file, which will be used to determine the current attributes in the conditions of having multiple '.gitattributes' files in the repository.\n
The implementation of the 'git bisect' command has been rewritten in C and integrated into the main executable file of git (previously, the command was implemented as a Shell script).\n
The old implementation of the 'git add --interactive' command, written in Shell, has been removed (in git 2.26, an integrated version in C was proposed, but the old Shell implementation remained available and was controlled by the add.interactive.useBuiltin setting).\n
The 'git merge-tree' command has added the '--merge-base' option.\n
The «git range-diff» command has been enhanced with the «—abbrev=<num>» option.\n
It is now possible to override the list editor for the interactive mode of the rebase command by setting the GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR variable using the «git var» command, similar to «git var GIT_EDITOR».\n
The account subsystem has added support for passwords with expiration limits.\n
In the Bash command-line completion scripts, a case-insensitive mode has been implemented. <\/ul>\n
