The release of Kali Linux 2023.1 has been announced, marking the tenth anniversary of the project. The distribution is based on Debian and is intended for testing systems for vulnerabilities, conducting audits, analyzing residual information, and identifying the consequences of attacks by malicious actors. All original developments created within this distribution are distributed under the GPL license and are available through a public Git repository. Several ISO image variants have been prepared for download, sized at 459 MB, 3 GB, and 3.9 GB. The builds are available for i386, x86_64, and ARM architectures (armhf and armel, Raspberry Pi, Banana Pi, ARM Chromebook, Odroid). The default desktop environment is Xfce, but KDE, GNOME, MATE, LXDE, and Enlightenment e17 are also optionally supported. <\/p>\n
Kali includes one of the most comprehensive toolsets for computer security specialists: from tools for testing web applications and penetrating wireless networks to software for reading data from RFID identification chips. It comes with a collection of exploits and over 300 specialized utilities for security checks, such as Aircrack, Maltego, SAINT, Kismet, Bluebugger, Btcrack, Btscanner, Nmap, p0f. Additionally, the distribution includes tools for accelerating password cracking (Multihash CUDA Brute Forcer) and WPA keys (Pyrit) using CUDA and AMD Stream technology, allowing the utilization of NVIDIA and AMD GPUs for computational operations.

A new specialized build, Kali Purple (3.4 GB), has been introduced, including a selection of platforms and tools for organizing defense against attacks. It includes packages for intrusion detection, network protection, incident response, and recovery after attacks, such as the Arkime network traffic indexing system, the Suricata and Zeek attack detection systems, the GVM (Greenbone Vulnerability Management) security scanner, the Cyberchef data analyzer, the Elasticsearch SIEM threat detection system, the TheHive incident response system, and the Malcolm traffic analyzer.

User environments have been upgraded to Xfce 4.18 and KDE Plasma 5.27.\n
Access restrictions to privileged network ports have been disabled in kernel settings (it is no longer necessary to be root to attach to ports numbered up to 1024). Restrictions on launching dmesg have been lifted.\n
Support for the non-free-firmware repository, developed for Debian 12, has been added.\n

Updated the environment for mobile devices based on the Android platform \u2014 NetHunter, with a collection of tools for testing systems for vulnerabilities. With NetHunter, it is possible to perform attacks specific to mobile devices, such as emulating USB device operations (BadUSB and HID Keyboard \u2014 emulating a network USB adapter that can be used for MITM attacks, or a USB keyboard performing character substitution) and creating fake access points (MANA Evil Access Point). NetHunter is installed in the standard Android platform environment as a chroot image, which runs a specially adapted version of Kali Linux. The new version adds support for Motorola X4 with LineageOS 20, Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G with OneUI 5.0 (Android 13), and LG V20 with LineageOS 18.1. <\/ul>\n
