Valve has announced the release of Proton 8.0, which is based on the Wine project codebase and aims to enable the launch of gaming applications designed for Windows on Linux, showcased in the Steam catalog. The project's developments are distributed under the BSD license. <\/p>\n

Proton allows you to run gaming applications available only for Windows directly in the Steam Linux client. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9\/10\/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), which work by translating DirectX calls to the Vulkan API. It provides improved game controller support and the ability to use fullscreen mode regardless of the screen resolutions supported by the games. To enhance the performance of multi-threaded games, it supports the mechanisms of 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex\/fsync'. <\/p>\n
