Joshua Strobl, the key developer of the Budgie project, has proposed the inclusion of Fedora Onyx, an atomically updatable variant of Fedora Linux with the Budgie desktop environment, into the official Fedora builds, complementing the classic Fedora Budgie Spin and resembling Fedora Silverblue, Fedora Sericea, and Fedora Kinoite, which are shipped with GNOME, Sway, and KDE. The Fedora Onyx edition is suggested to be delivered starting with the release of Fedora Linux 39, but the proposal has yet to be reviewed by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical aspects of the Fedora distribution's development. <\/p>\n
Fedora Onyx is based on the technologies of Fedora Silverblue and is also delivered as a monolithic image, not divided into separate packages, and atomically updated by complete replacement. The base environment is constructed from official RPM packages of Fedora using the rpm-ostree toolkit and is mounted in read-only mode.
