Dreamworks Animation Studio has published the first update of the open rendering system OpenMoonRay 1.0, which uses ray tracing based on numerical integration via the Monte Carlo method (MCRT). MoonRay focuses on high efficiency and scalability, supporting multi-threaded rendering, parallel operations, SIMD vector instructions, realistic lighting simulation, ray processing on the GPU or CPU, path-based lighting simulation, and rendering volumetric structures (fog, fire, clouds). The code is released under the Apache 2.0 license. <\/p>\n

The system is ready for creating professional works, on par with feature films. For example, before the source code for the product MoonRay was opened, it was used for rendering animated films such as 'How to Train Your Dragon 3', 'The Croods 2: A New Age', 'Bad Boys', 'Trolls World Tour', 'Boss Baby 2', 'Everest', and 'Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish'. A proprietary framework called Arras is used to organize distributed rendering, allowing computations to be distributed across multiple servers<\/a> or cloud environments. To optimize lighting calculations in distributed settings, the Intel Embree ray tracing library can be used, and for shader vectorization \u2014 the Intel ISPC compiler. Rendering can be paused at any moment and resumed from the interrupted position. <\/p>\n

The package also includes a large library of materials based on physically based rendering (PBR), tested in working projects, and a layer of USD Hydra Render Delegates for integration with familiar content creation systems supporting the USD format. Various image generation modes can be applied, ranging from photorealistic to heavily stylized. With the support for distributed rendering, animators can track results interactively and simultaneously visualize several scene variations under different lighting conditions, material properties, and from different viewpoints. <\/p>\n
