Researchers from the Korean Advanced Institute of Technology have released the LTESniffer toolkit, allowing for passive listening and capturing of traffic between a base station and a mobile phone in 4G LTE networks without sending signals into the air. The toolkit provides utilities for traffic interception and implements an API for using LTESniffer functionality in third-party applications. <\/p>\n

LTESniffer decodes the physical PDCCH (Physical Downlink Control Channel) to obtain traffic information from the base station (DCI, Downlink Control Information) and temporary network identifiers (RNTI, Radio Network Temporary Identifier). Identifying DCI and RNTI further allows for decoding data from PDSCH (Physical Downlink Shared Channel) and PUSCH (Physical Uplink Shared Channel) to gain access to incoming and outgoing traffic. However, LTESniffer does not decrypt encrypted messages transmitted between the mobile phone and the base station, providing access only to information transmitted in clear text. For example, unencrypted messages sent by the base station in broadcast mode and initial connection messages are transmitted, allowing the collection of information about from which number, when, and to which number calls were made. <\/p>\n

To organize interception, additional equipment is required. To capture traffic only from the base station, a programmable transceiver (SDR) USRP B210 with two antennas costing about $2000 is sufficient. For capturing traffic from a mobile phone to a base station, a more expensive SDR board USRP X310 with two additional transceivers is needed (the cost of the set is about $11000), as passive sniffing of packets sent by phones requires precise time synchronization between sent and received frames and simultaneous reception of signals at two different frequency ranges. A sufficiently powerful computer is also required for protocol decoding; for analyzing base station traffic with 150 active users, a system with an Intel i7 CPU and 16GB of RAM is recommended. <\/p>\n
