As part of the Crab project (CrabLang), development has begun on a fork of the Rust language and the Cargo package manager (the fork is called Cragbo). The leader of the fork is Travis Wagner, who is not listed among the 100 most active Rust developers. The reason for creating the fork is cited as dissatisfaction with the increasing influence of corporations on the Rust language and the questionable policies of the Rust Foundation regarding trademark usage. <\/p>\n
The creators of Crab do not intend to splinter the community and will not develop a separate branch concurrently \u2014 the project is presented as a synchronized fork, providing an alternative solution based on the Rust codebase, which continues to be viewed as the benchmark. Changes from the main branches of the Rust language and the Crate package manager will be periodically merged into the main branches of the forks, after which Crab releases will be formed, functionally identical to Rust releases, but without imposing the inherent restrictions of the Rust project on developers. <\/p>\n
The primary goal of Crab is said to provide the community with an alternative that aligns with its values and does not impose restrictions based on corporate interests. It is expected that Crab will be appealing to those who wish to have more freedom in using the language, creating products based on it, and promoting those products without fear of trademark infringements.
