The developers of the openSUSE project have released a new version of the Agama installer (formerly D-Installer), which is being developed to replace the classic installation interface of SUSE and openSUSE, notable for decoupling the user interface from the internal components of YaST. Agama allows the use of various front-ends, such as a front-end for managing installations through a web interface. For package installation, hardware checks, disk partitioning, and other necessary functions during installation, YaST libraries continue to be used, on top of which middleware services are implemented, abstracting access to the libraries through a unified D-Bus interface. <\/p>\n
For testing, live builds with the new installer (x86_64, ARM64) have been created, supporting the installation of the continuously updated openSUSE Tumbleweed build, as well as editions of openSUSE Leap Micro, SUSE ALP, and openSUSE Leap 16, based on isolated containers.

The basic interface for managing installations is built using web technologies and includes a handler that provides access to D-Bus calls via HTTP, along with the web interface itself. The web interface is written in JavaScript using the React framework and PatternFly components. The service for binding the interface to D-Bus, as well as the built-in HTTP server, are written in Ruby and built using ready-made modules developed by the Cockpit project, which are also used in Red Hat web configurators. The installer uses a multiprocess architecture, ensuring that the user interface remains responsive while other tasks are being executed.

At the current stage of development, the installer provides services responsible for managing the installation process, configuring product content and the list of programs to be installed, setting language, keyboard, and localization options, preparing the storage device and partitioning, presenting prompts and auxiliary information, adding users to the system, and configuring network connections. <\/p>\n
Among the goals of Agama's development is to eliminate the existing limitations of the graphical interface, expand the functionality of using YaST features in other applications, move away from reliance on a single programming language (the D-Bus API will allow for extensions in various languages), and encourage the creation of alternative configurations by community representatives. <\/p>\n
The Agama interface is designed to be as simple as possible for the user, with the option for selective package installation removed.
