Leah Rowe, the lead developer and founder of the Libreboot distribution, has introduced the first release of the Canoeboot project, developed alongside Libreboot and positioned as a completely free build of Libreboot that meets the Free Software Foundation's criteria for fully free distributions. Previously, the project was published under the name 'unofficial GNU Boot', but after a claim from the creators of GNU Boot, it was initially renamed to nonGeNUine Boot, and now to Canoeboot. The Canoeboot release 20231026 is based on the recent version of Libreboot 20231021, from which components and changes not meeting the Free Software Foundation's criteria have been removed. <\/p>\n
The necessity of creating a separate build of Libreboot is explained by the Free Software Foundation's requirements for free distributions, which do not allow for the inclusion of binary firmware or any binary driver components. Meanwhile, starting last year, the Libreboot project transitioned to more pragmatic rules for using binary components, allowing for a significant expansion of supported hardware. The new goal of the Libreboot project became to support all hardware supported in CoreBoot, except for binary components that affect security and reliability (for example, Libreboot uses me_cleaner to disable Intel ME). With this approach, Libreboot lost its status as a fully free distribution from the perspective of the Free Software Foundation. <\/p>\n

The transition to the under-development branch of the GRUB bootloader 2.12-rc has been completed. Support has been added for encrypted partitions in the LUKS2 format, utilizing a key formation mechanism based on the argon2 algorithm (previously, only configurations with PBKDF2 were supported). <\/li>\n
The commands of the lbmk (Libreboot build system) toolkit have been simplified; for example, instead of '.\/build boot roms', you can now specify '.\/build roms'. The number of build scripts has been reduced from 50 to 12. Two audits of the lbmk build system have been conducted, resulting in a 50% reduction in code size and improved performance. <\/li>\n
The directory structure has been restructured. The contents of the 'resources\/scripts\/' directory have been moved to a separate 'script\/' directory, and the 'resources\/' directory has been renamed to 'config\/' since it now only contains configuration files and patches (patches are planned to be moved to the 'patch\/' directory). The IFD\/GbE files have been moved to the 'config\/ifd\/' directory. Manufacturer-specific binary files have been separated from IFD\/GbE files and placed in the 'vendorfiles\/' directory. <\/li>\n
Support for building serprog firmware for RP2040 (pico-serprog) and STM32 (stm32-vserprog) based boards has been added. The serprog protocol is supported in flashrom and is used for flashing SPI flash. <\/li>\n
The U-Boot bootloader used in Chromebook firmware has been updated to version 2023.10. <\/li>\n
Synchronization has been performed with the Coreboot repository as of October 12, and with the SeaBIOS repository as of August 24.\n
