The OpenELA (Open Enterprise Linux Association), established in August by companies CIQ (Rocky Linux), Oracle, and SUSE to unite efforts in ensuring compatibility with RHEL, has announced the availability of a repository with packages that can be used as a foundation for creating distributions fully binary-compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, behaving (at the error level) identically to RHEL and suitable as a replacement for RHEL. The source codes of the prepared packages are distributed freely and without restrictions. <\/p>\n
The new repository is supported by the collaborative efforts of the development teams of RHEL-compatible distributions Rocky Linux, Oracle Linux, and SUSE Liberty Linux, and includes the necessary packages for forming distributions compatible with RHEL branches 8 and 9. In the future, there are plans to publish packages for distributions compatible with RHEL branch 7. In addition to the source codes of the packages, the project also intends to distribute the tools required to create derivative distributions fully compatible with RHEL. <\/p>\n
The OpenELA repository has taken the place of the git.centos.org repository, which was discontinued by Red Hat. After the closure of git.centos.org as the sole public source for RHEL package code, only the CentOS Stream repository remains. Additionally, Red Hat clients have the option to download srpm packages through a restricted section of the site, where a user agreement (EULA) is in effect that prohibits redistribution, making it impossible to use these packages for creating derivative distributions. The CentOS Stream repository is not fully synchronized with RHEL, and the latest versions of packages do not always match those from RHEL. Typically, development of CentOS Stream is done slightly ahead, but there are also cases where updates for some packages (such as the kernel) in CentOS Stream may be published with a delay. <\/p>\n
The OpenELA repository promises to maintain high standards of quality by employing a fully open development process and ensuring timely publication of updates and vulnerability fixes. The project is open, independent, and neutral. Any interested organizations, companies, or individual developers can join in the collaborative effort to maintain the repository. <\/p>\n
A non-profit corporation has been established to oversee the association, addressing legal and financial matters. Additionally, a Technical Steering Committee has been created to make technical decisions, coordinate development, and provide support. The committee initially included 12 representatives from the founding companies of the association, with expectations for future participation from the community. <\/p>\n
