Products prepared for download include Fedora Workstation, Fedora Server, Fedora CoreOS, Fedora Cloud Base, Fedora IoT Edition, and live builds offered as spins with desktop environments such as KDE Plasma 5, Xfce, MATE, Cinnamon, LXDE, Phosh, LXQt, Budgie, and Sway. Builds are available for x86_64, Power64, and ARM64 (AArch64) architectures. The release of Fedora Silverblue builds is delayed.

The most significant changes in Fedora Linux 39 are:

The desktop in Fedora Workstation has been updated to GNOME 45, which now features a dynamic indicator in the panel. virtual desktops, enhanced system search performance, added a camera activation indicator, utilized hardware acceleration for video playback, replaced the image viewer and camera application, modified the sidebar display style, and updated to GTK 4.12 and libadwaita 1.4 libraries.

The Bash shell now defaults to a colored command line.

Package versions have been updated, including RPM 4.19, gcc 13.2, LLVM/Clang 17, binutils 2.40, glibc 2.38, Python 3.12, Perl 5.38, Golang 1.21, Boost 1.81, Vagrant 2.3, Haskell GHC 9.4, and LibreOffice 7.6.

Meta-packages default-fonts* have been added to simplify the updating and installation of default fonts.

NetworkManager now automatically migrates existing connection profiles stored in the ifcfg format (/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-*), to a keyfile-based format.

It is now possible to remove the tzdata package from the time zone database to reduce the size of isolated containers.

The sysctl value vm.max_map_count has been increased from 65530 to 1048576 by default to improve compatibility with Windows games running through wine or steam.

The createrepo_c utility now uses the Zstd algorithm for compressing repository metadata by default, and the generation of metadata in SQLite database format has been discontinued.

An official Fedora Onyx build has been added, featuring an atomically updated variant of Fedora Linux equipped with the Budgie desktop environment. This new build complements the classic Fedora Budgie Spin and resembles Fedora Silverblue, Fedora Sericea, and Fedora Kinoite, which provide GNOME, Sway, and KDE. Fedora Onyx is based on the technologies of Fedora Silverblue and is also delivered as a monolithic image, not divided into separate packages and atomically updated via complete replacement. The base environment is built from official Fedora RPM packages using the rpm-ostree tool and is mounted in read-only mode. The flatpak system is used to install and update additional applications, allowing apps to be separated from the main system and run in an isolated container.

The Sericea and Sway Spin editions have ceased to deliver xorg-x11 packages.

In the Fedora Kinoite edition (an atomic-updating variant of Fedora with KDE), automatic system updates are enabled by default.

The Fedora Silverblue and Fedora Kinoite editions are built using a more secure unified core mode with rpm-ostree.

The formation of images with the LXQt user environment for the Aarch64 architecture has begun.

Fedora Cloud has implemented the ability for automatic reboots after installing updates to packages that require a system restart. This feature is facilitated by creating a file /var/run/reboot-required after executing the 'dnf update' operation and checking it in cloud-init.

Users managed through Active Directory, FreeIPA, or LDAP are provided the opportunity to use Passkeys technology, allowing passwordless authentication using biometric identifiers such as fingerprints or facial recognition, utilizing a FIDO2-compliant device supported in the libfido2 library.

The minimum size of the ESP (EFI System Partition) used during the installation of Fedora has increased from 200 to 500 MB due to insufficient space for firmware updates. The 500 MB limit aligns with the specifications used by Microsoft since Windows 10.

The QGnomePlatform and Adwaita-qt themes, which were used to give Qt applications GNOME-like settings and styles for better integration into the GNOME environment, are no longer supplied. The reason cited is the stagnation of these themes and issues using them with some applications.

The aspell spelling check packages have been deprecated, and it is recommended to use hunspell or enchant2 instead. The reason given is the lack of updates in the aspell project over the past 4 years.

The pam_console package has been removed, as it was not used by default, had security issues, and could be replaced with functionality from systemd.

The package with man-pages-ru has been discontinued, as translations of man pages into Russian are also included in the man-pages-l10n package.

The fedora-repos-modular package has been removed from the base installation, and the modular repository has been disabled. This change has sped up the DNF package manager by reducing the number of checks and metadata downloads.

The method of building Flatpak packages in the distribution has been changed. Instead of using modules when rebuilding packages with the 'prefix=/app' parameter, a separate build target has been employed.

The building and delivery of separately updated modules, whose lifecycle is not tied to the main components of the distribution, has been discontinued. Support is provided independently of the distribution releases, which allowed the coexistence of packages with different versions of the same application. The reason for discontinuing module support is attributed to a loss of interest in module development and issues with maintaining existing modules (the last activity on pagure.io/modularity was observed more than 3 years ago).

Preparatory work has been carried out related to the second stage of transitioning to the updated boot process proposed by Lennart Poettering. The differences from the classic boot process pertain to the use of a unified kernel image (UKI) instead of an initrd image generated on the local system when installing a package with a kernel. The UKI is generated in the distribution infrastructure and is digitally signed by the distribution. UKI consolidates in one file the handler for loading the kernel from UEFI (UEFI boot stub), the Linux kernel image, and the initrd memory environment. When invoking the UKI image from UEFI, it provides the ability to verify the integrity and authenticity of not only the kernel but also the content of initrd, the authenticity of which is critical since this environment is responsible for extracting keys to decrypt the root filesystem. The primary goals for implementation in the second and third stages are: integration of systemd-boot support into the installer, moving away from kernel command line dependency for configuration, discontinuing the storage of confidential data in initrd, and changing the handling of optional dracut modules.

The transition to the DNF5 package manager and the new installer based on a web interface has been postponed until the release of Fedora 40. Additionally, the previously planned removal of the org-x11-drv-vesa and xorg-x11-drv-fbdev drivers, along with related code from the xorg-x11-server-Xorg package, originally intended for Fedora 39, has been canceled. At the same time, the developers plan to discontinue support for X11-based sessions in the distribution builds with KDE and GNOME in Fedora 40.

Additionally, it is worth noting the introduction of 'free' and 'nonfree' repositories from the RPM Fusion project for Fedora 39, which provide packages with additional multimedia applications (MPlayer, VLC, Xine), video/audio codecs, DVD support, proprietary drivers for AMD and NVIDIA, gaming programs, and emulators.

Source: <a content="nofollow" rel="nofollow"
