New versions of the AlmaLinux 8.9 and Rocky Linux 8.9 distributions have been released, synchronized with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.9 distribution and containing all the changes proposed in this release. The 8.x releases continue to be supported alongside the 9.x branch and aim to create a free build of RHEL capable of replacing the classic CentOS 8, whose support was discontinued at the end of 2021, rather than in 2029, as initially expected. The Rocky Linux 8.9 builds are prepared for x86-64 and aarch64 architectures, while AlmaLinux 8.9 is prepared for x86_64, ARM64, s390x, and ppc64le architectures. <\/p>\n

The distributions are binary-compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and can be used as a replacement for RHEL 8.9 and CentOS 8 Stream. Like classic CentOS, the changes made to the packages of Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux consist of removing the branding ties to Red Hat. Additionally, the AlmaLinux project supports the Synergy repository with packages for installing the Pantheon user environment from Elementary OS, while the Rocky Linux project has prepared the plus repository with the open-vm-tools package, nfv with packages for virtualizing network components developed by the NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) SIG group, RT with packages for real-time operation, HighAvailability and ResilientStorage with packages for creating fault-tolerant systems and storage.
