On November 27, 2023, a scheduled change of IPv4 and IPv6 addresses took place for one of the 13 root DNS servers that support the operation of the root DNS zone. For the server B.ROOT-SERVERS.NET, instead of an IP address<\/a> 199.9.14.201 is now using 170.247.170.2, while instead of 2001:500:200::b \u2014 it is now 2801:1b8:10::b. Despite the change in the root DNS servers list, the old addresses will continue to accept queries at least until November 27, 2024. However, DNS server administrators are advised not to delay making changes to the configuration (root-hints or named.root for the BIND package). <\/p>\n

The address changes were made as part of the efforts to enhance the reliability of the root server infrastructure servers<\/a> through diversifying the connection to addresses from various regional internet registries (RIRs). In particular, the new address 170.247.170.2 was allocated by the registrar LACNIC (Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Centre), which had previously not been involved with the root servers. <\/p>\n

The address change has alleviated the situation where some registrars, such as the Latin American LACNIC and the African AFRINIC, were not involved at all in maintaining root DNS servers, while the ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) registrar provided addresses for 10 out of the 13 existing root servers (of the remaining three IP addresses, two were associated with the European RIPE, and one with the Asian APNIC). <\/p>\n
