As an emulator, QEMU allows you to run software compiled for one hardware platform on a system with a completely different architecture, for example, running an ARM application on an x86-compatible PC. In virtualization mode, the performance of code execution in an isolated environment closely matches that of a physical system due to the direct execution of instructions on the CPU and leveraging the Xen hypervisor or KVM module.

Initially, the project was created by Fabrice Bellard to enable the execution of Linux binaries compiled for the x86 platform on architectures different from x86. Over the years of development, support for full emulation for 14 hardware architectures has been added, and the number of emulated devices has exceeded 400. More than 3,200 changes from 238 developers have been made in preparation for version 8.2.

Key improvements added in QEMU 8.2:

A virtio-sound device has been added, allowing emulation of a sound card for recording and playback of audio in the guest system using a sound backend (pulseaudio, sdl, or coreaudio) operating on the host system. To emulate the sound device in the Linux kernel for the guest system, the CONFIG_SND_VIRTIO option must be enabled.

A virtual graphics interface (VGI, Virtual Graphics Interface) rutabaga has been added, implementing a virtual GPU (virtio-gpu) similar to the previously available VirGL and also allowing the use of a virtual GPU in the guest system for 3D rendering, without granting exclusive direct access to the physical GPU. The rutabaga code has been developed as part of the Android/CrosVM project and allows the use of the Android platform emulator with standard QEMU.

A hv-balloon device has been added, implementing the Dynamic Memory protocol for Hyper-V, which allows for returning unused memory pages to the host system during operation and requesting additional pages in case of memory shortages. This new device can be seen as an alternative to virtio-balloon for Windows guest systems, using a host-side backend that supports the Dynamic Memory protocol.

A Universal Flash Storage device has been proposed for emulating a Flash drive.

The NBD (Network Block Device) driver has added support for a protocol extension that uses 64-bit offsets for performance improvement when handling large data sizes.

The dump-guest-memory command now supports outputting in the standard kdump format.

Support has been added for UFS emulation using new ufs and ufs-lu devices.

VFIO (Virtual Function I/O) has added support for P2P migration mode and implemented the ability for dynamic distribution of MSI-X. Preparation for transitioning to the new IOMMUFD backend has been carried out.

The virtio-mem device has implemented the mode «dynamic-memslots=on» for dynamically allocating multiple memory slots instead of statically distributing a single large slot. Using this mode allows for reduced memory consumption on large virtio-mem devices that provide a small amount of memory to the VM.

In the x86 architecture emulator during the emulation of the Xen hypervisor environment based on KVM support for the PV console and network devices has been ensured, and the commands for block and network devices have been simplified. The classic TCG code generator has added support for SHA instructions.

The ARM architecture emulator has implemented the emulation of the Cortex-A710 and Neoverse-N2 CPUs. Support has been added for the PACQARMA3, EPAC, Pauth2, FPAC, FPACCOMBINE, TIDCP1, MOPS, HBC, and HPMN0 processor extensions. Device modeling for Xilinx Versal boards has been implemented with CFU/CFI and TRNG.

The RISC-V architecture emulator has implemented a vector cryptographic instruction set. Support for virtual IRQs and IRQ filtering has been added. The support for Zicond extensions has been stabilized. Extensions for virtualization AIA (Advanced Interrupt Architecture) through KVM have been added.

The HPPA architecture emulator has provided emulation for the 64-bit PA-RISC 2.0 CPU and the C3700 system, including the Astro memory controller and Elroy PCI bridges.

The LoongArch architecture emulator has implemented the emulation of the Loongson LA132 CPU. Support has been added for the LASX instruction set extension and the PRELDX instruction.

In the s390x architecture emulator, vfio-ap support has been added for passing through the crypto adapter for secure guest systems.

The Tricore emulator has added support for TC37x processors (ISA 1.6.2) and the CRCN, FTOU, FTOHP, HPTOF instructions.

Source: <a
